Clayton Leep was looking for a spark for himself as well as his team in tonight's Rebel Holiday Classic semifinal against rival J.R. Tucker.
Down 30-17 at intermission, with only three points of his own, Leep ignited a second half charge, ending with 24 points as the Rebels defense frustrated the Tigers, holding them to just 17 second-half points en route to a 53-47 win to advance to Saturday's final at 7pm.
Gabe Fountain helped keep the Rebels (4-4) alive with seven first-half points, ending with 15 on the night. Paul Flowers had 19 for the Tigers (2-7), but only three after intermission. Tre Robinson scored 10 of his 14 points after intermission, trying to keep Tucker in the game.
The Tigers will face Lee-Davis in the boys consolation game Saturday at 3pm.
The Rebels get the Spartans of Steward School, who got 37 points from Chaise Johnson in a double-overtime 78-75 thriller over the Confederates in the first boys semifinal.
In girls action, Shannon Longworth's game-high 25 points weren't enough as the homestanding Rebels fell to rival J.R. Tucker, the #8 team in the RVA Sports Network Girls Basketball Top 10, 69-41. Annemarie Beran had 24 points for the Tigers, with balanced scoring, earning 11 in the first half, 13 after the break. Tiera Johnson added 19.
The Tigers (7-1) get St. Gertrude's, winners over Steward in the other girls semifinal, in the 5pm championship game Saturday.
