4A South becomes 4A East, but Henrico County won't care, because all nine high schools will reside in 5A South.
Two teams avoid a move to 5A North, putting seven county teams in the same conference.
Just some of the results of Wednesday's Virginia High School League (VHSL) vote on Conference and District Realignment for the 2015-2017 cycle.
The biggest change proposed originally by the VHSL's Alignment Committee, moving Mills Godwin and Deep Run from 5A South Region, Conference 11 to 5A North Region, Conference 16 with Atlee, was appealed by both schools and the county at the August 11 appeals hearing. The committee changed its mind and recommended the Wildcats and Eagles stay in Conference 11, which was part of the approved plan Wednesday by the Executive Committee.
1) Glen Allen and J.R. Tucker both move up from 4A to 5A South Region. Schools are assigned levels of classification (1A to 6A, 6A being the largest schools) based on student enrollment size. Both the Jaguars and Tigers move to Conference 11.
2) Varina moves down in classification from 6A to 5A. They will be assigned to Conference 12, which is currently comprised of only schools south of the James River (Chesterfield County and Prince George).
3) Highland Springs will shift from Conference 11 to Conference 12 to join Varina because Conference 11 could not have nine teams. This move makes Conference 12 consists of six teams, and puts natural rivals together for postseason play.
4) In District realignment (yes, Districts still exist and are used for regular season scheduling), Glen Allen was traded from the Capital to the Colonial District in exchange for Patrick Henry. This was done so the Jaguars could play their West End neighbors twice a season in most sports (baseball, softball, soccer, field hockey, basketball, etc.), and places the Patriots with their Hanover County brethren.
