It was a county sweep Friday evening in Tidewater as Deep Run girls soccer, Douglas Freeman baseball, and Mills Godwin boys soccer each claimed 5A South Region Championships, each against Hickory High School.
The Rebels came from behind to knock off Hickory at Norfolk State University, 6-4, scoring all of their runs in the 6th inning. Douglas Freeman is now 25-1, winners of seven straight since their lone loss of the season to Hanover on May 21st. The Hawks are in the 4A State Semifinals. The Rebels play next Friday in the 5A State Semis.
Elizabeth Ball does it again, scoring both goals as Deep Run shut out Hickory 2-0 to win the 5A South Girls Soccer crown. The Wildcats improve to 16-3-1 after starting the season 2-3-1, having not lost since April 1st, and next play in next Friday's 5A State Semfinals, two wins away from back-to-back state crowns.
Mills Godwin takes advantage of a late penalty to score the match's lone goal, as the Eagles knocked off Hickory 1-0 in the 5A South Boys Soccer finals. The Eagles are now 20-1, winners of 16 straight going back to a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Patrick Henry on April 10th. Mills Godwin plays next Friday in the 5A State Semis.
