NASCAR AT RIR: Logano Captures 1st-Ever Richmond Win....

On a night where tire troubles were front of mind, and one driver took four very late to try to charge to the front, another driver did so, then celebrated his win by....blowing a tire.

Joey Logano stormed to the lead with four laps to go in a heated four-car showdown Saturday Night to win the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway, his first-ever career win at the three-quarter mile track.

Logano had been in third place or better at each 20-lap milepost from Lap 160 to the finish, save a 6th place showing with 40 laps to go. And, with a charge by Brad Keselowski after the final restart of the race to battle Matt Kenseth for the lead, it looked like he may have to be content with just a top four finish.

But an opening came and Logano stormed ahead on Lap 396, the move dropping the jaws of many of the tens of thousands in attendance. By Lap 398, his lead was over half a second.

"The #2 car (Keselowski) was really, really good on restarting and the #20 (leader Kenseth) knew it. Then the seas parted and I got to pass both of them in one shot," Logano opined.

Logano credits going through the circuit a second time around with crew chief Todd Gordon with helping them clinch a Chase for the Sprint Cup berth with their second win of the season.

"We have a notebook now," Logano said. "At Darlington, for example, we had a good car, led laps, but we didn't have a notebook. We've learned from our experience."

Kyle Busch, who took four tires on the final caution as a last-gasp move to work his way to victory lane, finished third behind Gordon, pulling ahead of Keselowski and Kenseth, who ended the night at odds after some tangling during the deciding lap that put Logano ahead.

"It was crazy. We didn't have our best underneath it tonight, but I have no idea the last ten laps...I started 16th and finished third. That's about all I know," Busch said.

For Gordon, the points leader coming into the race, his confidence in his team remains sky high even though they played the bridesmaid. In the new qualifying format for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, one Cup victory by the next Richmond race on September 6th is almost mandatory in order to make the 16-car Chase field. But Gordon feels that time is very soon.

"It's frustrating to not win, but each time we run this good we get more confident we'll get that win," Gordon explained. "I feel like we can win races anywhere we go. When we run like this (tonight), we will win."

He will get his next opportunity at the Talledega SuperSpeedway for the Aaron's 499 next Sunday, May 4th.

Logano, Gordon, and Kyle Busch were followed in the top 10 by Keselowski, Kenseth, AJ Allmendinger, Earnhardt Jr, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and Martin Truex, Jr.

Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin, after climbing to as high as fifth after a 28th place start, fell back in the final 100 laps to finish 22nd. Hamlin continues to look for his first Cup win as well, having not seen victory lane since the Budweiser Duels at Daytona on February 20th.

THE WRAP: St. Christopher's Wins Thriller At Buddy Ball Fundraiser....

Pitchers battled. Defensive gems happened everywhere on the diamond. There was one towering home run.

But, in the end, it was a passed ball on the third strike of the would-be third out of the seventh inning that allowed the winning run to score, giving St. Christopher's their ninth straight win Saturday evening, 3-2 over Benedictine, in the 5th Annual Buddy Ball Pass The Hat fundraising game held at RF&P Park in Glen Allen.

The decisive pitch, from reliever Nick Roth, in for starter Michael A. Geary, who allowed just three hits over six innings, headed for the backstop. Davis Evans raced to first to beat the throw and Sam Griffin, who started the inning with an infield single to shortstop, came home.

Benedictine (6-5) got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Roth popped out to Cody Valenzuela at first base to end the threat, and the game. The Cadets left nine aboard in seven innings.

Valenzuela's towering home run off the Glen Allen Stadium scoreboard in right center in the top of the 2nd tied the game at 2-2, and the assembled fans thought a slugfest could be developing. But Geary and St. Christopher's starter, and winner, Giles Thompson, both settled in, keeping the score at 2-2 until the decisive seventh.

St. Christopher's is now 10-2, having not lost since a March 22nd defeat to Liberty Christian. They will go near Charlottesville Wednesday and Thursday for a two-game series at St. Anne's-Belfield. The Cadets are spending Sunday on a bus to Florida where they will play four games in a spring break tournament beginning Monday at 2pm.

The best news of the night? Nearly $5,000 was raised for the River City Buddy Ball organization, who works to help special needs children and teenagers play baseball. The amount was a record for the event.

FOOTBALL: The CFL Comes to #RVA....

Richmond, Virginia will always be a part of the history of the Canadian Football League's newest franchise, the Ottawa Redblacks.

The Redblacks completed the first mini-camp, and team practices, in team history today at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center, the first steps for this the third CFL franchise to call the Nation's Capital of Canada home. The Ottawa Rough Riders played from 1958 to 1996, while the Ottawa Renegades lasted four seasons in the mid 2000's.

Excitement is high in Ottawa, with 14,000 season tickets sold, 18,000 of the available 24,000 taken for the team's first-ever home game on July 18th, the third week of the 2014 season.

Below, hear from two Redblacks with Virginia ties:

--Quarterback Henry Burris, who played collegiately at Temple and fondly remembers his battles with Virginia Tech in the former Big East football conference, talks to HCS Media Network about his position as a leader, both on and off the field, for the newest CFL franchise.

WATCH the interview with Burris BY CLICKING HERE!

--Defensive Back Seth Williams was a part of the 2008 National Championship for the Richmond Spiders! Williams is excited for a fresh start with Ottawa, especially coming off a serious ankle injury that cost him his 2013 season after two years with Montreal.

Best wishes to the Ottawa Redblacks in their inaugural CFL season! Their schedule is available HERE.
