Aftermath of 16-Year Old's Tragic Death: Race To Go On....

Authorities have identified the runner who collapsed after completing a half-marathon in Virginia Beach Sunday and later died as 16 year-old Douglas Freeman High School student Cameron Gallagher.

Gallagher recently transferred to Freeman from St. Gertrude, where she was on the swimming and softball teams. Gallagher had just finished swimming with the Freeman Club Swimming team, which enjoyed its inaugural season in 2013-14.

Gallagher was also part of an organizing effort to create a special 5K run to raise awareness on the subject of suicide prevention.

It's called the "Speaking Up 5K", and remaining organizers wish to hold the event in Cameron's memory.

Find out more about the 5K and how you or your organization can help it in preparation, planning, and however else you can help, by going to their Facebook page by CLICKING HERE.

HCS Media Network offers our deepest condolences to Cameron's family, her friends, and the families of Douglas Freeman at St. Gertrude.

THE WRAP: Ice Cold: Henrico Shoots Their Way Out of Championship As Potomac Prevails...

"We shot 25% for the game, 15% from three. You can't win shooting like that....especially against a good team."

Those were the wise words of Henrico head coach Vance Harmon in the wake of his Warriors' defeat in today's 5A Boys State Basketball Championship Game, 54-42 to the Potomac Panthers. Potomac won their second state title with the victory.

The difference between today's Potomac win and their 70-64 overtime win at Henrico December 28th in the Henrico Holiday Hoops Classic Final was George Mason commit Trey Porter. Porter used his 6' 9" frame to disrupt the Warriors' offensive flow, while blocking six shots, two of them coming on what would have been momentum-changing Henrico transition baskets.

Porter finished with 18 points, leading scorer for Potomac, and four rebounds to go with the six blocks. Randall Haynes and Xavier Laws each had 11, Laws with key back-to-back baskets, one for three, for the Panthers to end the third quarter at 44-34. The Warriors never got within six points again.

De'Monte Buckingham led Henrico with 18 points and 7 rebounds, but had to deal with foul issues the entire game, picking up his third early in the third quarter, his fourth with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter. He fouled out with 1:58 to go.

Matthew Wallace had a tremendous game for the Warriors, with 13 points and 12 rebounds, five of them offensive. Overall, Henrico actually outrebounded Potomac 37-32, 20 of those 37 on the offensive boards.

But Henrico's inability to put the ball in the basket was the difference-maker. The Warriors were 5-for-33 in the second half, an abysmal 15.2%. They finished 13-of-54, 24.1%, for the contest.

"We went to the free throw line more than they did, but at the end of the day, we've got to hit some shots," Harmon exclaimed. "We were throwing some bricks out there."

Ryan Pearson struggled, shooting 1-for 12, Walter Williams was 1-for-8, Marquis Johnson 0-for-3.

Buckingham and Pearson both agreed with their coach when he proclaimed the loss a "setback" for the team, but how the game would not define his young team, and that they would return.

"This team lost eight graduating seniors, four starters from last year. I told the guys, these particularly (pointing at Pearson and Buckingham) that I could not be more proud of how they led this team. We had a lot of unique pieces to this puzzle," Harmon said.

Buckingham summed up the game succinctly.

"We came together as a team and tried to get the big win," Buckingham said. "But we couldn't do it. They came together as a team, too."

The Warriors finish at 21-7, with back-to-back championship game appearances. They will lose seniors Claude Clarke, Jordan English, Wallace, Nick Buckingham and Tony Daniels.

Buckingham, just a sophomore with multiple Division I offers including Virginia, Virginia Tech, VCU and Richmond in the state alone, and Pearson, a junior, will return, along with Williams, Tristan Bazemore, and Marquis Johnson.

ALERT: Highland Springs Falls to Hubbard, Princess Anne....

The Highland Springs Springers simply could not stop Gadiva Hubbard.

The junior guard went 6 for 9 from beyond the three-point arc in the second half to help Princess Anne erase a five-point Highland Springs lead and win the 5A Girls Basketball State Championship 57-52.

Hubbard's 18 points from long distance helped Princess Anne (27-1) outscore Highland Springs 35-25 after intermission. The biggest stretch of the contest to doom the Springers (24-3) came as the 3rd quarter ended and the 4th got underway.

The Springers were behind 38-37 with :25 to go in the 3rd with the ball. Bri Justice, who finished in great pain and with 13 points, drove for a shot rather than wait for the last shot of the quarter. Her miss led Princess Anne on the break, finding Justyce Swango for her only field goal on the afternoon, a three-pointer at the buzzer to extend the Cavaliers' lead to 41-37.

In the first minute of the final quarter, Justice, while being double teamed at midcourt, collapsed in pain, holding her right knee/leg injured in the previous meeting between these two teams in the 5A South Region Finals nine days ago.  For a time, it looked like her game was over.

She did check back in with 3:58 to go, but by then, the damage had been done by Hubbard, and Justice was no longer a factor. Hubbard continued to seal the deal with a trey right after the timeout at 3:58 left that allowed Bri back into the game, giving Springer Nation an emotional boost.

After Hubbard's 35, Janayla White had 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Mercedes Tapia added six.

For Highland Springs, it was freshman Ciera Crudup who led with 14 points, followed by Justice with 13 in her final game for the Springers. Najai Pollard added 10 points, 8 of which came in the second half.

The Springers now say goodbye to seven seniors, including Justice, E'Shay Winfield, Tia Byrd, and Temea Coker. Pollard, Crudup, Cam Gaitling, and Jennifer Coleman is the core returning as Highland Springs will again regroup, and come back for another opportunity at that elusive first State Championship.

Congratulations to Highland Springs on their successful season overall, and a salute to Justice for playing through pain to a degree the past week that none of us will probably ever realize.

GAMEDAY: Highland Springs, Henrico Go For 5A State Championships....

The day has finally arrived!  The Highland Springs girls and Henrico boys basketball teams play for state titles in the new 5A classification this afternoon at the Siegel Center.

Highland Springs will play Princess Anne, who defeated the Springers nine days ago in the 5A South Region Championship game when the Springers lost point guard Bri Justice early in the affair to an injury. Justice returned just three days later to lead Highland Springs to a state semifinal victory and the rematch.

Princess Anne took Cosby to overtime at Highland Springs in the StatVA.com Classic on January 18th. Both teams, at full strength, should be a classic encounter. The Cosby game was Princess Anne's only loss on the season.

Tip is set for 12 noon. You can watch the game, for a fee, by CLICKING HERE.

The Henrico boys will follow around 2pm facing Potomac for the second time this season. In their first encounter, Henrico took Potomac to overtime before falling 70-64 in the finals of the Henrico Holiday Hoops Classic on December 28th in a game heard live on HCS Media Network.

This game can also be seen live at the above link.

REMINDER: We will LIVE tweet real-time score updates throughout both games this afternoon, so if you don't already, follow us on Twitter, @henricosports, for the absolute latest information!

We'll also have recaps of the games here later today as well as a photo gallery of Championship Friday later tonight on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/henricosports!

SEMIFINAL SATURDAY: County goes 2-1....

The Henrico Warriors boys and the Highland Springs girls will play for 5A State Basketball Championships on Friday afternoon at the Siegel Center.

Behind a gutsy performance by Bri Justice, hurt in the 5A South Regional Final Wednesday night, Highland Springs eliminated 5A North champion Thomas Edison (Alexandria) 70-60 to earn a spot in the Girls 5A title game at 12 Noon.

Ryan Pearson went 8-for-8 at the free throw line, Monte Buckingham 7-for-10 as Henrico took advantage of late opportunities at the charity stripe to put away Wakefield 63-55. The Warriors will play for their 2nd consecutive state crown, winners of the final "Group AAA" title in 2013, at 2pm Friday against the winner of Maury/Potomac, being played tonight in Norfolk. Henrico lost to Maury in the 5A South Region final last Wednesday, and fell in overtime to Potomac December 28th in the finals of their Henrico Hoops Holiday Classic, in a game broadcast exclusively on HCS Media Network.

The Glen Allen boys fell short in their quest for a trip to the 4A State Finals, allowing a 10-0 John Handley run to end the game, as a 54-51 4th quarter deficit turned into a 64-51 final. The season ends for the Jaguars in their first state tournament appearance in only their fourth year of existence, at 17-11, an impressive postseason run considering they began play over two weeks ago in the Conference 20 Tournament as only the #3 seed behind Hanover and Midlothian. They defeated both of them to claim the Conference Tournament championship.

THE WRAP: 5A South Region Finals: County Goes 0-2, Springers Lose Top Player....

It was the worst possible scenario for Highland Springs in Wednesday evening's 5A South Girls Region Championship Game against Princess Anne in Portsmouth.

Star point guard, and the engine of the Springers, Briana Justice, went down with a knee injury in the 1st period and never returned. And the Springers never recovered.

Princess Anne won the Region title with a 74-52 count, up comfortably for most of the game after Highland Springs had to scramble to find the right combinations without their star.

There is no word yet on whether Justice will be available when the Springers travel to Fairfax on Saturday to face Thomas Edison of Alexandria, the 5A North Champions, in one 5A State Semifinal.

In the Boys Final, Henrico took an early lead, punctuated by a long trey to end the first quarter from Ryan Pearson, but Maury asserted their control in the second half, then kept the Warriors at bay the rest of the way, defeating Henrico 61-49.

Monte Buckingham led the Warriors with 12, followed by Pearson with 9. Henrico falls to 20-6 and, too, must make the trip to Fairfax Saturday for a 5A State Semifinal date with 5A North Champion Wakefield, who handed Potomac their first loss of the season in the 5A North Region Final. You may recall Henrico and Potomac playing an overtime thriller in the Henrico Holiday Hoops Classic back on December 28th.

Tickets are $10 and should be available via the main offices at Highland Springs and Henrico.

NOTE: There will be THREE county teams playing Saturday in State Semifinal action, as in 4A, South runner-up Glen Allen will take on 4A North Champion John Handley in a 1pm game at James Madison University. Tickets, too, are $10, available at the Glen Allen main office. The Jaguars have selected a "Blackout" theme for fans going to Harrisonburg for the game.

GAMES ON! 5A South Region Championships TONIGHT!

After two postponements, it's time for basketball!

Both games are at Churchland High School in Portsmouth.

5A SOUTH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP: Highland Springs (23-1) vs. Princess Anne (25-1), 6PM.

NOTE: Both teams' only loss came at the hands of 6A State Semifinalist Cosby. The Springers lost to the Titans 50-49 in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament Finals December 23rd at Siegel Center, while Princess Anne lost to Cosby 80-77 in overtime January 18th at the StatVa.com Classic at Highland Springs High School.

5A SOUTH BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP: Henrico (20-5) vs. Maury (22-3), 8PM.

Both Highland Springs and Henrico will continue into this weekend's 5A State Semifinals regardless of tonight's results. Tonight's games determine whether, with a win, they host a state semifinal at the Siegel Center on either Friday or Saturday, or, with a loss, they have to travel, most likely Saturday to Fairfax to play the 5A North Champions at Robinson Secondary School.
