And the champs play on....

The Henrico Warriors, two-time defending champions in their Holiday Hoops Tournament, and the defending State Group AAA Champions, survive a huge scare from a talented Midlothian Trojans squad, winning 74-71 to make their tournament final Saturday night.

As expected, Coach Vance Harmon's crew will battle possibly the favorite to come out of the 5A North Region come March, the 9-0 Potomac Panthers. But they had their hands full all night with the Meadowbrook Monarchs, holding a small lead most of the game, never able to pull away, and finally escaping with a 66-64 win.

Brandon Cheeks led Meadowbrook with 23 points, while the Monarchs defensive scheme held Panthers 6' 9" center Trey Porter to just 9 points.

In consolation semis, both Hermitage and Glen Allen were victorious. The Panthers go to 2-6 handing the Raiders their sixth straight defeat 80-63. Robbie Osbourne continues to make a bid for the All-Tournament Team with 22 points to go with his 19 point, 18 rebound performance in their loss to Midlothian on Friday. Jarel Spellman scored 19 points and pulled down 15 boards as the Panthers outrebounded the Raiders by an astounding 52-19 margin.

The Panthers get a rival just down the road in Saturday 4pm 5th Place Game: The Glen Allen Jaguars. The Jaguars avenged an overtime loss three weeks ago to Hanover, defeating the Hawks 63-59. Grayson Midulla continued his strong play, scoring 23 points to lead the Jaguars into Saturday's showdown with a school not three miles from theirs.

Meanwhile, the Glen Allen girls team disposed of J.R. Tucker 62-40 to advance to Saturday's final at the Clover Hill Holiday Tourney.  The Jaguars will face Hanover in the finals, the Hawks winners of Appomattox Regional Governor's School.

The Varina boys basketball team fell in the Fort Lee Holiday Tournament semifinals, 52-37 against Hopewell. The Blue Devils play Prince George in consolation action Saturday.

Mills Godwin's boys were victorious over Madison 51-38. The 6-3 Eagles play host Lake Braddock in the 5th Place Game of the Lake Braddock Tournament at 4pm.

Conversely, the Eagles girls' team fell to George Mason 55-48 in the Chantilly Pohanka Classic in Northern Virginia. Jessica Martin led the 4-5 Eagles with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Prince George, led by star Ariel Stephenson, won their Holiday Tournament with a 77-54 win over Henrico in girls action Friday night....
