CROSS COUNTRY: Congratulations to the Mills Godwin Girls Cross Country team for capturing first place in the Class 5A South Regional Championships on Wednesday. Three Eagles placed in the top five, including winner Katharine Benfer (18:17.95) and runner-up Sarah Goodrich (18:32.53). Hannah Bullen finished fifth at 18:55.26.

The team won handily with 61 points, 43 points ahead of runner-up Atlee. Deep Run placed 3rd overall with 110 points. Both the Eagles and Wildcats advance to the Class 5A State Championships November 15th and 16th.

On the boys' side, Matthew Novak of Deep Run fell two seconds short of winning the individual 5A South Region crown, crossing the line at 15:31.68, just behind winner Nathaniel Hall of Atlee.  Wildcat teammate Grayson Reid was 6th (15:56.18), while Alexander Varon was 8th (16:17.15). Peyton Artz of Douglas Freeman was 9th overall, advancing to states, at 16:18.89.

Deep Run captured the boys team title with 73 points, 14 ahead of runner-up Hickory. Freeman was 10 points out of the 6th and final slot for the State Finals.

In 4A South, the Glen Allen Jaguar boys team finished second at their Region tournament Wednesday to qualify for the 4A State Championship. The Jags scored 68 points, second only to Midlothian at 35. Top Jaguar performers included Stanley Davis (5th: 16:33.20), Alex Byrd (7th: 16:41.50) and Thomas Davis (17th: 17:26.40).  J.R. Tucker's Joshua Munro qualified individually for the State 4A Tournament finishing 21st in a time of 17:35.90.

In the girls race, Katie Sperry of Glen Allen finished second (19:01.40), helping the Jaguars finish sixth and grab the final team berth in next week's 4A State Championships!  Teammate Rebecca Fagan finished 14th in a time of 20:57.60.

VOLLEYBALL: Deep Run will play tonight for the Conference 11 (Central 3) title against familiar foe Douglas Freeman.  The Wildcats swept Mills Godwin in the conference semis Wednesday night, and the Rebels did likewise to Lee-Davis.  First serve is at 6pm at Atlee High School.

Glen Allen's boys and girls teams both meet Midlothian for the Conference 20 (Boys: Central 5) titles tonight at Monacan High, with the girls match beginning at 6pm.  Boys will play immediately following....
