PLAYOFF FOOTBALL: Freeman, Hermitage Survive; Springers' season ends in heartbreak, Varina hangs on....

Almost 1,000 yards of total offense, 75 points, but the anticipated Hermitage/Highland Springs showdown ended being settled by a HUGE defensive play.

Highland Springs QB DJ Johnson was sacked on a play with 18 seconds left from the Hermitage 6-yard line, looking to tie the game, and the clock ran out as the #5 Panthers knocked off the homestanding #4 Springers, 41-34 in a first round Class 5A South Central Zone classic.

Highland Springs ends their season at 8-3, while Hermitage wins their 8th straight, improves to 9-2, and gets #1 LC Bird next Friday night. LC Bird's last loss, in the 2011 playoffs, was to Hermitage. Last year, LC Bird came to Chester Fritz and knocked off the favored Panthers. Hermitage goes to Chester for yet another Panthers/Skyhawks postseason affair.

Another classic 5A South game went TRIPLE overtime, as Douglas Freeman overcame a 10-point second half deficit to outlast Manchester 48-47 to move to 10-1 and set up a rematch with the Atlee Raiders in the other Class 5A South Central Zone semifinal. Freeman is the only team to beat Atlee this year, a 24-14 home win September 20th. The Rebels must now travel to Raider Nation next Friday for the rematch.

The Hermitage/LC Bird winner meets the Douglas Freeman/Atlee winner Saturday November 30th for the Class 5A South Central Zone berth in the Regional Championship game December 7th at Old Dominion University...

LC Bird scored 29 points in the first 8 1/2 minutes to roll over Mills Godwin 49-0, ending the Eagles' season at 7-4.

Varina survived a Woodbridge comeback, knocking off the #8 seed in Class 6A South Central Zone 26-21. DaShawn Hand, the #1 recruit in America according to Rivals.com, who committed to Alabama on television yesterday, scored a touchdown late, but the Blue Devils were able to run out the clock to move to 9-2.  They'll face Forest Park next week, who, as the #5 seed, traveled over 200 miles to knock off #4 seeded Patrick Henry-Roanoke.

Glen Allen's first-ever playoff game takes place Saturday, 2pm at Todd Stadium in Newport News against Denbigh in Class 4A South 1st Round action....
