When the Dayton Flyers, preseason favorites to capture the 2013-14 Atlantic 10 women's basketball championship, take the court at home against the University of Indianapolis this Friday, "The Road to Richmond" will begin.
For the first time, the Atlantic 10 will hold its women's basketball conference tournament at a neutral site, and that site is the Richmond Coliseum. The A-10, the City of Richmond, and SMG, owners of the Richmond Coliseum, signed a three-year agreement to host the tourney in RVA, beginning with the 2014 edition March 5 through 9.
Semifinals on Saturday March 8th will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network, the championship game airs Sunday March 9th on ESPNU.
At Atlantic 10 Media Day at the Coliseum last Tuesday, HenricoCountySports represented HCS Media Network at the event, sitting down for conversations with nine of the 11 coaches in attendance (two could not attend).
Over the next two weeks, as teams finish preparations for the regular season, we will share some of the conversations with you here at HenricoCountySports.net to begin our season-long series, "The Road To Richmond."
It is our intention, and hope, to help not just basketball fans in Metro Richmond learn more about the 13 teams in the A-10, but fans in general. In turn, we hope it will encourage more fans to come and experience the event come March 5th through 9th, making the partnership between the Atlantic 10 and #RVA more than just a three-year experiment.
COMING WEDNESDAY: A talk with the head coach of the preseason favorites, Jim Jabir of Dayton!
