FOOTBALL FRIDAY: WEEK 8 SCHEDULE

The race for the playoffs enters the homestretch with a full slate of games featuring teams either trying to solidify playoff berths or keep their hopes alive.

HERMITAGE (5-2, #6 in Class 5A South Central Zone) at MILLS GODWIN (4-3, #8 in Class 5A South Central Zone): The Panthers come off their impressive 26-10 win over Douglas Freeman, handing the Rebels their first loss. The Eagles must contend with Nate Roscoe, who set a single-game rushing record for Hermitage last week. Hermitage needs to win out and get help to earn a home game in the first round of the playoffs November 15th, while Mills Godwin needs to win just to hold onto the final berth in Central Zone, as the Top 8 make the postseason. Lee-Davis, Prince George, and Matoaca all loom just behind them.

DOUGLAS FREEMAN (6-1, #4 in Class 5A South Central Zone) at J.R. TUCKER (4-3, #15 in Class 4A South Playoffs): An amazing four-game win streak puts the Tigers into the playoff hunt, but not by much. They need at least another win to clinch a spot in the Top 16. After putting up 64 points last week on winless Deep Run (but only winning by five points), Tucker will have tons of confidence in their scoring ability. But Douglas Freeman will be looking to re-earn some respect lost in the eyes of some thanks to that 26-10 loss at Hermitage.  Farkas, Gerstenmeier, Farinholt and company must salivate at the thought of facing a defense that gave up 59 points last week, and life will be tougher on Tucker QB Malik VanBrussell against the Rebel defense.

GLEN ALLEN (3-4, #13 in Class 4A South Playoffs) at VARINA (6-1, #2 in Class 6A South Region Central Zone): The Jaguars, still a young team in only its third season of existence, have hit the hurricane portion of their schedule, coming off losses to Highland Springs, Lee-Davis and Atlee. Their offense can't seem to find double-digit production. They must against a Varina squad back on track with a win last week and a high playoff seed to protect in 6A South.  Whether it's Corey Finney or Tim Minor under center, the Blue Devils are favored to win.  If they do, the Jaguars will probably need to win their last two game (at Henrico, vs. Hanover) for the school's first-ever postseason bid.

HENRICO (#10 in Class 5A South Central Zone) at HIGHLAND SPRINGS (#2 in Class 5A South Central Zone): Homecoming tonight for the Springers against a team free-falling.  Coach Gerald Glasco's team started 3-0, have lost four straight, and Glasco now must embody the definition of "homecoming" by facing his former team and boss, Loren Johnson. Glasco left Highland Springs earlier this year to take the Henrico HC job, taking some Springer assistants with him.  But he couldn't take DJ Johnson and his talented group of skilled players like Felton Davis, KC Hinton, Alex Wilson and others.  They'll likely make the difference tonight.

Deep Run is off tonight, but will go to 3-4 Thomas Jefferson to battle the Vikings Saturday afternoon in a 1pm kickoff.  The Wildcats continue to search for their first win of 2013 at 0-7.
