On their way to a 21-1 regular season mark, the Deep Run Wildcats compiled some amazing statistics.
None more than this: the Wildcats have won 43 consecutive sets of volleyball. 43.
They haven't lost a set since losing set #3 to Douglas Freeman in a four-set victory on September 5th. That's 55 days ago.
Deep Run finished the regular campaign disposing of Patrick Henry Tuesday night in Ashland, breaking open a close early first set with an 11-0 run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 19-10 lead en route to a 25-13 win. Christian Taylor served 11 times in a row.
Taylor did it again at the outset of the second set, stunning the Patriots by taking a quick 8-0 lead. Later, it was 12-1. The Wildcats played substitutes most of the remainder of set two, and Patrick Henry mounted a slight comeback, but fell 25-16.
Patrick Henry made set three much more interesting, a nip and tuck affair finally taken by Deep Run by a 25-22 count to finish the match, and the regular season.
Taylor also contributed 33 assists to go with his deft serving, while Colton Stone anchored the left corner for 13 kills, junior Craig Nelms the right corner for 12.
Deep Run now awaits the start of the first-ever Conference 11 Tournament, which tips off Monday at Atlee High School, looking the part Tuesday night of the favorite to win the Central Zone Region title on the way to an appearance in the state final four the week of November 18th downtown at the Siegel Center.
