Mixed results for county teams as the 2013 season for sports other than golf got underway Monday, but we'll start with golf....
Glen Allen easily defeated Hermitage one-on-one, 174-237 at Hunting Hawk in Rockville Monday afternoon. Holden Davis led the way for the Jags with a 39 over the nine holes.
VOLLEYBALL: A great start to 2013 for a team on the rise, as Glen Allen swept Monacan in three sets Monday evening. Returning starter Lauren Wells paced the Jaguars to wins of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-16.
FIELD HOCKEY: Two tough 2-1 home losses greeted two county teams today in season openers. Mills Godwin took an early 1-0 lead on Atlee but seemed to run out of gas in the second half, as Atlee scored with just under 15 minutes left to tie and with just 3:10 to go to pull out a 2-1 victory. The Eagles fall to 0-1, as do the Henrico Warriors, who welcomed Patrick Henry to Azalea Avenue for their season opener and fell as well by a 2-1 count.
On the winning side, Glen Allen began 2013 across the river in Smoketree against new Conference 20 rival Monacan and came away with a 3-2 victory. The JV squad was also victorious.
With wins today in golf, girls volleyball and field hockey, Glen Allen fall sports is off to a roaring start, and the football team hopes to win their season opener for the second straight year Thursday when they host Caroline.
